Islamic State West Africa Province attacked a Nigerian military base in Kukawa, Borno State, in a coordinated assault that left several Nigerian soldiers dead.
The militants attacked the 101 Special Forces Battalion from multiple directions, but Nigerian troops, supported by the Air Component, repelled the assault.
The military said more than 25 terrorists were killed during the counterattack and weapons were recovered.
A senior military officer put the number of soldiers killed at 10.
The attack highlights the continuing threat posed by ISWAP in northeastern Nigeria, particularly against military formations located in remote areas.
It also shows that despite sustained military operations, insurgents retain the ability to organise large-scale attacks against security positions.
The immediate priority is to strengthen vulnerable military bases, improve intelligence and prevent militants from exploiting isolated locations.
What to watch next is whether the military identifies how the attackers were able to assemble and approach the base and whether additional measures will be introduced to protect troops and nearby communities.
