The removal of Ebonyi State Commissioner for Works, Stanley Lebechi Mbam, has raised an important governance question: what happened inside the ministry responsible for one of the state’s most visible areas of public spending?
The commissioner was removed from office in September, with the state government directing him to hand over government property and transfer his responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary.
The government did not publicly disclose a specific reason for the latest removal.
That detail matters because the development did not occur in isolation.
Earlier in 2026, the commissioner had been suspended over alleged dereliction of duty before being recalled.
The latest removal therefore creates a legitimate public-interest question about the performance and supervision of the state’s public works programme.
This is not an allegation that the former commissioner committed wrongdoing.
It is a question of accountability.
Ebonyi’s 2026 budget places heavy emphasis on capital projects and infrastructure, meaning the Ministry of Works occupies an important position in translating public expenditure into roads, bridges and other physical projects.
When a senior official responsible for such a major portfolio is suspended, recalled and subsequently removed, citizens deserve clarity about what changed.
Was the issue performance?
Was it project supervision?
Were there disagreements over implementation?
Or was the decision based on another administrative matter?
The government has the right to appoint and remove officials.
But public accountability requires more than announcing personnel changes. Citizens should also be able to understand how such decisions affect the projects and public resources under the affected ministry.
For Ebonyi, the bigger issue is not the fate of one commissioner.
It is whether the state’s large infrastructure spending is being properly supervised, transparently implemented and converted into projects that citizens can see and use.
That is the question worth following.
We don’t just report the news. We analyse what it means.
