George Weah, the 51-year-old former AC Milan striker has been elected the new president of Liberia in the country’s presidential run-off held on December 26, 2017. George Weah won 12 of the 15 counties in Liberia while his opponent, 73-year-old Joseph Boakai who has been the country’s vice president for the last 12 years won only two counties in the election. George Weah becomes the 25th president of Liberia and will succeed Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (79-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner who was the first African woman to be elected head of state).
