More than a month after one of the largest mass kidnappings reported in Niger State, residents of communities around Borgu are still waiting for hundreds of abducted people to return home.
Residents say armed men abducted hundreds of people during coordinated attacks on August 21. Current local estimates put the number still in captivity at between 600 and nearly 700, although there is no independently verified final figure.
The uncertainty over the actual number of victims has itself become part of the problem. Residents have called for a proper headcount so families and authorities can establish who remains missing.
The situation has also affected normal life in the area. Residents say insecurity has restricted movement and affected access to markets and healthcare, while a protest in New Bussa has increased pressure on the authorities.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu previously ordered security agencies to secure the victims’ release. However, residents say there has been little visible progress more than a month after the attacks.
The issue now goes beyond the original kidnapping. It raises questions about the ability of security agencies to respond to mass abductions, protect vulnerable communities and communicate clearly with families waiting for their relatives.
For those families, the most important measure of the government’s response is not another assurance. It is the safe return of the people still being held.
