Nigerian security forces responding to a mass kidnapping in Niger State

Federal Government Prepares New Five-Year Security Strategy

The Federal Government is preparing a new five-year security strategy as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its response to terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and other threats.

The government says improved intelligence sharing has already produced results, including the capture of a wanted terrorist and his chief of staff without a gun battle.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had directed the preparation of a National Threat Assessment and a rolling five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan.

The strategy is expected to identify the country’s major security threats, operational priorities, equipment requirements, manpower needs and funding gaps.

The move comes as Nigeria continues to deal with different security challenges across several regions. These threats are often interconnected, with criminal groups exploiting weak borders, difficult terrain and gaps in intelligence coordination.

A national strategy could improve coordination between security agencies and help government plan beyond individual incidents.

But the existence of a strategy will not by itself make communities safer.

Its success will depend on intelligence reaching the right agencies at the right time, adequate equipment, effective coordination, rapid response and the ability to dismantle criminal networks.

The government will therefore need measurable results: fewer attacks, faster rescue operations, improved protection of communities and successful disruption of terrorist and criminal networks.

For Nigerians, those outcomes will matter more than the strategy document itself.

We don’t just report the news. We analyse what it means.
