Nigeria’s 2027 general election is now about 109 days away, but the Independent National Electoral Commission is still awaiting about ₦371 billion of its approved election funding.
The commission’s projected budget for the 2027 elections is ₦873.78 billion. About ₦500 billion has reportedly been released, leaving roughly ₦371 billion outstanding.
The remaining funds are important because election preparation involves long-lead activities that cannot simply be completed at the last minute.
The Independent National Electoral Commission still has major commitments covering Permanent Voter Card production and collection, electoral technology, procurement of sensitive and non-sensitive materials, logistics, contractors, personnel and security arrangements.
The commission says preparation is already progressing, including work on voter registration data, voter-card collection and procurement.
But the funding gap creates a second question that is just as important as the request for more money: how has the first ₦500 billion been deployed?
The public deserves to know what has already been spent, what has been committed, what remains outstanding and which election preparations depend on the release of the balance.
This is not merely a financial issue.
Late funding can create procurement pressure, rushed logistics and unnecessary costs. At the same time, public scrutiny of the money already released is essential because electoral funding is public money.
With the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, the issue is becoming time-sensitive.
The priority now should be timely funding, transparent expenditure and evidence that every naira allocated to the election is being converted into credible electoral preparation.
