Memorial candles and a damaged community scene representing the deadly Binnari attack in Taraba State and questions over the death toll

Binnari Massacre: 10, 40 or 50 Dead? Where Are the Answers?

At least 25 people were reportedly killed when gunmen attacked Binnari community in Taraba State on Friday, October 23. But conflicting casualty figures have raised a troubling question: how many people actually died, and why has the death toll not been reconciled?

The police initially confirmed 10 deaths. Amnesty International reported at least 40, while some community accounts put the figure as high as 50. The final toll remains unverified.

Reports say the attackers opened fire, looted property and burned homes and shops. Residents fled for their lives, with some reportedly missing during the chaos.

But the questions go beyond the death toll.

Where were the security agencies when the attack began? When were distress calls received, and how quickly did security personnel respond?

Who is responsible for the killings? What steps have investigators taken to identify, arrest and prosecute those behind the attack?

Where is the verified casualty register? Families deserve to know whether their loved ones are dead, missing or receiving treatment. Conflicting figures must not leave victims trapped in uncertainty.

What protection has been provided to survivors? Beyond condemnations and promises, what concrete measures are in place to prevent another attack on vulnerable communities?

The government must publish an updated casualty count, explain the discrepancies and provide a clear account of the security response.

The difference between the police figure and the higher reports does not, by itself, prove that officials deliberately concealed deaths. But such a wide gap demands an independent, transparent investigation.

Authorities cannot measure their response by the strength of their statements. They must answer for the facts, the response and the protection residents can expect going forward.

Binnari’s people need more than condolences. They need verified answers, justice for the victims and security that prevents another massacre.

We don’t just report the news. We analyse what it means.
