President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the operationalisation of new Nigerian Army formations in Zamfara, Kebbi, Oyo and Osun states as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security response.
According to the President, the new formations will bring troops closer to vulnerable communities and improve the ability of the military to respond quickly when Nigerians come under threat.
The move is significant because insecurity in Nigeria is no longer concentrated in a single part of the country. Different regions continue to face different combinations of kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes.
Zamfara and Kebbi have faced serious security challenges in the North-West, while the establishment of additional military presence in Oyo and Osun signals a broader approach to security rather than one focused exclusively on the traditional conflict zones.
President Tinubu also announced that the Federal Government is accelerating the construction of new military barracks and depots in Abuja, Ekiti, Ebonyi and Kogi states, while construction of a facility in Osun State has been completed.
Bringing troops closer to communities can improve response time, but physical presence alone will not solve Nigeria’s security problem.
The effectiveness of the new formations will depend on adequate personnel, equipment, intelligence, logistics and coordination with the police and other security agencies.
The real measure of success will therefore be what happens on the ground.
If communities become safer, response times improve and attacks decline, the expansion will demonstrate its value. If attacks continue despite increased military presence, the government will need to examine the intelligence, operational and logistical gaps behind the failures.
What Nigerians should watch next is whether the new formations translate into measurable improvements in security across the affected states.
