Reports indicate that some individuals from the Nsukka community in Enugu State have appealed to Mr. Peter Obi to withdraw the ₦5 billion defamation lawsuit he reportedly filed against former spokesperson and actor, Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo.
Somehow, the dispute has continued to generate public debate following comments allegedly made by Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo suggesting that he possessed information about Mr. Peter Obi which, if made public, could influence Nigerians’ perception of the former Anambra State governor.
Supporters of Mr. Peter Obi argue that the lawsuit is not driven by personal anger but by a desire to have the allegations tested through the legal process. They contend that where serious public allegations are made against anyone seeking elective office, the person making those claims should be prepared to present evidence before a competent court of law.
According to Mr. Peter Obi’s supporters, he has maintained that if any credible evidence exists showing that he is unfit to seek the presidency, Nigerians deserve to know. They argue that public office seekers should be held accountable and subjected to scrutiny, but that such scrutiny should be based on verifiable facts rather than unsubstantiated allegations.
Supporters further believe that the ongoing legal proceedings provide Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo with an opportunity to substantiate the claims he allegedly made. They maintain that the court is the appropriate forum to determine the truth of the matter, while respecting the legal rights of all parties involved.
As the matter remains before the courts, many Nigerians believe the legal process should be allowed to run its course, with any findings ultimately determined based on the evidence presented and in accordance with the law.
