President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign has begun, with the All Progressives Congress using its Kaduna rally on 24 October to defend the administration’s record and seek another mandate.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima and party leaders highlighted government policies and investments as reasons Nigerians should support a second term. Those claims deserve examination against measurable results, not acceptance simply because they come from the ruling party.
The central question is whether the administration’s economic reforms are improving ordinary people’s lives.
Changes to fuel subsidies and foreign-exchange policy have reshaped Nigeria’s public finances and economy. The government can point to its stated objectives and reported gains. But families still need to know what these policies mean for food prices, transport fares, wages, employment and access to healthcare.
Economic indicators alone cannot tell the full story. Nor should hardship automatically be treated as proof that every reform has failed. The proper test is whether the benefits, costs and distributional effects can be demonstrated with reliable data.
The President and his party should answer straightforward questions. How has purchasing power changed? What measurable progress has been made in creating secure jobs? Are food costs becoming more manageable? What targets have been met on insecurity, education and public services?
A campaign is an opportunity to present evidence, explain failures and make commitments that voters can assess.
Nigerians should demand specific targets, credible timelines and transparent reporting. Opposition parties must also be challenged to explain how their alternatives would work and how they would be funded.
Re-election is not an award for promises or political loyalty. It is a request for another term in office.
The public should judge the administration by its record, the people who have benefited, those who continue to struggle and the credibility of its plans for the next four years.
