NATO and Mauritania security cooperation amid growing insecurity across the Sahel region

NATO STRENGTHENS TIES WITH MAURITANIA AMID SAHEL INSECURITY

NATO has deepened its engagement with Mauritania through discussions on regional security and cooperation. The talks focused on security challenges in the Sahel, a region facing terrorism, political instability and cross border crime.

The development came as the European Union finalised details of a new Sahel security project expected to support Mauritania and Chad in addressing terrorism and irregular migration.

Foreign partnerships can provide training, equipment and intelligence support. Still, they cannot replace strong local institutions, respect for human rights and genuine cooperation with the people living in affected communities.

African governments should make the terms of such agreements public. Citizens need to know what support their countries are receiving, what conditions are attached and how the partnerships affect national sovereignty and civilian protection.

The key question is whether these projects will reduce attacks on civilians or simply increase military spending without improving safety. Security cooperation should be judged by the protection it gives ordinary people.
