Nigeria is moving to develop the Ima gas field offshore Rivers State, more than five decades after the resource was discovered.
TotalEnergies and AMNI International have taken the Final Investment Decision for the project, with production expected to begin in 2028. The field is projected to produce about 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day at peak production.
The development is important because the gas is expected to support Nigeria LNG’s Train 7 expansion on Bonny Island, helping provide part of the additional gas required for the project.
The Ima project also has a significant Nigerian financing component, with Nigerian financial institutions expected to provide a major share of the project financing. Local employment opportunities are also expected to form part of the development.
For Nigeria, however, the bigger story goes beyond one gas field.
The country has substantial gas resources, yet many discoveries have remained undeveloped for years because of financing, infrastructure, commercial and regulatory challenges.
The Ima project therefore provides another test of whether Nigeria can turn its gas reserves into actual production, jobs, government revenue, industrial activity and foreign exchange.
The discovery may have waited more than five decades. The next question is whether the project can now be delivered on schedule and whether Nigerians will see meaningful economic benefits from it.
