Ghana Seeks Reversal of Canada’s Entry Ban on Midfielder Thomas Partey

The Ghanaian government has called for a review of Canada’s decision to deny midfielder Thomas Partey entry into the country ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Partey, a key member of Ghana’s national team, was refused a visa and will miss the Black Stars’ opening World Cup match against Panama in Toronto.

The decision comes as the 32-year-old footballer faces criminal charges in the United Kingdom. Partey has pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of rape and one count of sexual assault linked to allegations made by four women between 2020 and 2022. His trial is expected to take place next year.

In a statement, the Ghanaian government described Canada’s decision as unfair, arguing that the player has not been convicted of any offence and should continue to benefit from the principle of presumed innocence.

Authorities in Accra said they are actively engaging with Canadian officials through diplomatic channels in the hope of securing a reconsideration of the decision.

Canadian immigration rules allow authorities to deny entry to foreign nationals who have committed or been convicted of certain crimes. Officials have not publicly provided additional details regarding Partey’s visa refusal.

While unable to travel to Canada, Partey has remained with Ghana’s squad at their training camp in the United States.

United States authorities confirmed that the midfielder was granted entry because he has not been convicted of any crime and met the requirements for a visa.

Ghana’s coaching staff have continued to back the experienced midfielder, who remains available for matches scheduled to take place in the United States during the tournament.

The situation has generated debate among football supporters and legal observers, with discussions focusing on the balance between immigration laws and the principle that individuals are innocent until proven guilty in court.
