If a new leader steps into office in Nigeria in 2027, all the bad elements within the armed forces, especially the Nigerian Police Force, must be removed.
The treatment Nigerians receive daily from some law enforcement officers, particularly police personnel on roads across the country, is becoming unacceptable. The activities of officers at many checkpoints are bringing serious disrepute to Nigeria. Reports of extortion of motorists and intimidation of innocent citizens continue to raise concerns about accountability and discipline within the force.
This issue has been highlighted many times. There have been repeated calls to the leadership of the Nigerian Police Force to address the conduct of officers on duty. However, there appears to be little improvement, and this has increased public frustration.
At a time when many Nigerians are already facing economic hardship, these actions make the situation worse. Instead of protecting citizens, some officers are seen as taking advantage of them. This weakens public trust in law enforcement.
Looking ahead to 2027, the responsibility on the next administration will be significant. There must be a full reform of the Nigerian Police Force. A clear and enforceable code of conduct must be introduced to ensure professionalism, accountability, and respect for citizens.
The reputation of the police has been badly damaged. Restoring public confidence will require serious and consistent action. A new standard of conduct is not just necessary. It is urgent.
