The Inspector General of Police is being urged to address the conduct of officers at checkpoints across Nigeria and to put an end to practices that are seen as damaging to the country’s image.
It is widely reported that some Nigerian police officers stationed along major roads continue to carry out stop and search activities, which many believe have already been restricted or abolished as alleged. These actions have raised concerns among citizens who feel that such practices are no longer appropriate.
There are also claims that some officers conduct searches without proper authorization. According to these concerns, no police officer should search an individual or their personal belongings, including mobile phones, without a valid warrant. However, it is alleged that such practices still occur in various parts of the country.
We therefore appeal to the Inspector General of Police to address this issue and ensure that officers at checkpoints across Nigeria adhere strictly to established laws and procedures.
This situation is seen by many as harmful to Nigeria’s image, and there is a growing call for leaders to take decisive steps that will improve public trust and project a more positive image of the country.
