Nigerian military operations against terrorism and kidnapping

Nigeria’s Security Numbers Show Gains, But the Real Test Is Sustained Safety

Nigeria’s military says its forces neutralised 554 terrorists and criminals, arrested 1,333 suspects and rescued 1,736 kidnapped civilians during operations in the third quarter of 2026.

The figures also include the surrender of hundreds of insurgents, the recovery of weapons and ammunition, and the destruction of illegal refining sites.

On paper, the numbers indicate significant operational activity across Nigeria’s security theatres.

But statistics alone cannot tell the entire security story.

The most important question is whether these military successes are producing sustained security for communities.

For families living in areas affected by terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, success is not measured primarily by the number of suspects arrested or weapons recovered.

It is measured by whether children can attend school safely, farmers can reach their farms, traders can travel without fear and families can sleep without worrying about attacks.

The military’s figures therefore deserve recognition, but they should also create a higher standard for measuring progress.

If hundreds of criminals are neutralised but insecurity repeatedly returns to the same communities, then the country must look beyond military operations and address intelligence, local security structures, economic vulnerability, justice and the conditions that allow criminal networks to regenerate.

The third-quarter figures show that security forces are actively engaging the threat.

The next question is whether those operations can produce something Nigerians need even more: lasting security.

We don’t just report the news. We analyse what it means.
