Many people from Ebonyi State believe that the administrations of former Governors Sam Egwu and Martin Elechi placed significant emphasis on education, arguing that their investments helped lay a stronger foundation for the state’s future development.
Somehow, critics contend that the priorities of the state changed after former Governor David Umahi assumed office. They argue that greater attention was given to large-scale infrastructure projects, while sectors such as education and rural development did not receive the same level of focus. Supporters of Mr. Umahi, however, maintain that his administration embarked on major infrastructure projects intended to modernise the state and stimulate long-term economic growth.
Critics have also questioned the economic value of some capital projects executed during Mr. Umahi’s tenure, including the construction of the Ebonyi State airport. They argue that greater investment should have been directed towards improving schools, healthcare, rural roads and other essential services capable of directly improving the lives of ordinary citizens. These are matters of political opinion and remain subjects of public debate.
Some Nigerians have also criticised the continued operation of the Ebonyi State Liaison Office in Abuja, arguing that maintaining the office places an unnecessary financial burden on the state. Others, however, believe liaison offices play legitimate administrative and governmental roles.
Critics further allege that some schools lacked adequate learning facilities and that many rural communities continued to experience poor road infrastructure during Mr. Umahi’s administration. They argue that stronger investment in education and human capital would have produced greater long-term benefits for the state.
Some commentators have also pointed to reports indicating that Ebonyi ranks among the poorest states in Nigeria on certain development indicators. They argue that future administrations, including that of Governor Francis Nwifuru, should prioritise education, job creation, agriculture, healthcare and rural development to improve living standards across the state.
Many Nigerians also believe that all present and former public office holders should remain accountable for how public funds are managed. They argue that where credible evidence of corruption or abuse of office exists, the appropriate authorities should investigate such allegations and, where warranted, prosecute those responsible in accordance with the law.
