Security operations in Delta State have resulted in the rescue of a kidnapped woman and the arrest of 54 suspected cultists in separate operations.
Police said a 48-year-old woman who had been kidnapped was rescued after security operatives moved into a forest in Ovade following a distress call.
The suspected kidnappers reportedly fled after a gun battle with the security team.
In separate intelligence-led operations across the state, 54 suspected cultists were arrested. Security operatives also recovered a locally made firearm, ammunition and suspected cannabis.
The operations highlight the importance of intelligence, rapid response and information from communities in tackling kidnapping and organised criminal activity.
However, arrests are not the same as convictions. The suspects must be investigated, and prosecution must be based on admissible evidence.
The larger security question is whether such operations can consistently disrupt criminal networks and prevent them from returning to the same communities.
