Chinese shopping district representing economic growth alongside concerns about domestic demand and consumer spending

China’s Economy Grows 4.5%. Why Are Domestic Demand Concerns Persisting?

China’s economy expanded by 4.5 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, accelerating from 4.3 per cent in the previous quarter. Strong exports, particularly in higher-value manufacturing, helped support growth and kept the country on course to meet its annual target.

Yet the headline figure does not tell the whole story. Domestic demand remains weak, consumers are cautious, and the property sector continues to struggle. China’s trade surplus reached approximately $938 billion through September, increasing concerns among trading partners about the imbalance between its exports and domestic consumption.

The development matters beyond China because the world’s second-largest economy influences manufacturing, commodity demand and international trade. For Nigeria, the effects will depend on the goods it imports, demand for its exports and any trade measures that emerge as other economies respond to China’s expanding export strength.

Growth in China does not automatically translate into gains for Nigerian businesses or households.

The key question is whether China can strengthen household demand rather than relying so heavily on exports. Watch for new stimulus measures, changes in property policy and trade restrictions that could reshape global competition and prices.
