The former president of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison while six of his co-defendants were sentenced to death by a court in Cairo on Saturday, June 18, 2016. According to report, ex-president Morsi was convicted of leading an unlawful organization (Brotherhood which has been blacklisted as a terrorist group) and for having stolen secret documents concerning the country’s security. His six co-defendants who were sentenced to death for helping to pass secret documents to Qatar are three journalists, two from Al-Jazeera (Ibrahim Mohamed Hilal and Alaa Omar Mohamed Sablan) and Asmaa Mohamed al-Khatib, a female reporter with pro-Muslim Brotherhood news outlet “Rassd”. Others are Ahmed Ali Abdo (documentary producer), Mohamed Adel Kilani (EgyptAir cabin crew member) and Ahmed Ismail Thabet (university teaching assistant). Mohamed Morsi came to power as the Egyptian first democratically elected president after 2011 revolution which removed Hosni Mubarak from power. His (Morsi) government was overthrown by the military in 2013 after one year in office and he was later detained by then-army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who is the current president of Egypt.
