Regional diplomatic meeting representing renewed ECOWAS and Sahel Alliance dialogue on cooperation in West Africa

ECOWAS and the Sahel Alliance Resume Talks. Can Dialogue Deliver Results?

The Economic Community of West African States and the Alliance of Sahel States, comprising Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, held their first official ministerial dialogue on cooperation in Dakar, Senegal, on 17 October 2026, since the three countries formally withdrew from ECOWAS.

The meeting produced an agreement to establish joint thematic working groups to prepare a framework for future cooperation. The discussions were conducted around principles including good neighbourliness, mutual respect and sovereignty. However, the meeting did not announce a return of the three countries to ECOWAS or settle the practical terms of future cooperation.

The renewed dialogue is important because political divisions among West African governments can complicate cross-border trade, movement, intelligence sharing and responses to insecurity. Nigeria has a direct interest in whether regional institutions can work together effectively, particularly where security threats and commercial routes cross national boundaries.

But diplomatic language is not a result. The two sides must now identify clear priorities, set timelines and establish practical arrangements that protect citizens and support regional stability.

The Sahel governments must demonstrate that their pursuit of sovereignty can improve security and living conditions, while ECOWAS must show that engagement can produce useful cooperation without demanding political conformity.

The next stage should be judged by concrete commitments, not the symbolism of a meeting. Watch for the working groups’ mandates, the next ministerial session and any agreements that change conditions for ordinary people.
