President Bola Tinubu at a public event amid renewed political discussions

Tinubu: From Reform to Prosperity – Now Comes the Harder Test

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria has moved beyond the most difficult phase of his administration’s economic reforms and is entering a new period focused on prosperity.

The message, delivered as Nigeria marked 66 years of independence, represents an important shift in the government’s economic narrative.

For more than three years, the administration has defended difficult measures including petrol subsidy removal, foreign exchange reforms and fiscal changes as necessary steps to correct longstanding economic distortions.

The government now says those reforms have created a stronger foundation for growth.

But this is where the real test begins.

Economic reform cannot be judged only by government revenue, gross domestic product figures or improved financial indicators. Nigerians ultimately experience the economy through food prices, transport costs, electricity, jobs, wages, housing and the ability to meet basic needs.

The administration therefore faces a different challenge in this next phase: converting macroeconomic improvement into household-level prosperity.

The President has also acknowledged that millions of Nigerians continue to struggle and has pointed to social intervention programmes, education financing, consumer credit and other measures as bridges towards greater prosperity.

Those programmes may provide temporary support, but they cannot replace a productive economy capable of creating sustainable jobs and reducing the cost of living.

Nigeria’s 66th year of independence therefore begins with a clear question for the government.

Can the economic reforms that the administration says have stabilised the country now deliver visible improvements in the everyday lives of Nigerians?

The next phase will be judged less by promises of prosperity and more by whether ordinary Nigerians can actually feel it.

We don’t just report the news. We analyse what it means.
