Why Is It That No Lawmaker in Nigeria Has Ever Advocated for Independent Candidacy?

Many Nigerians continue to question why no lawmaker has seriously championed the idea of independent candidacy in Nigeria. Independent candidacy would allow qualified individuals to contest for political offices without belonging to any political party, provided the constitution permits such an arrangement.

If Nigeria’s constitution made provision for independent candidacy, individuals with credibility, integrity, and widespread public support would not be forced to align with political parties in order to contest elections. Figures such as Mr. Peter Obi, who enjoys strong grassroots support, are often cited as examples of leaders who could potentially succeed on their own merit without party affiliation. Many believe that he possesses the capacity to lead Nigeria to greater heights.

However, critics argue that the political elite are fully aware of the implications of independent candidacy. As a result, there appears to be little interest among lawmakers at the National Assembly in introducing or supporting such a system. Some Nigerians believe this reluctance is rooted in the fear that independent candidacy could weaken party dominance and disrupt the existing political structure.

There is therefore a growing appeal to lawmakers at the National Assembly to consider introducing independent candidacy into Nigeria’s electoral framework. Supporters believe that such a system would deepen democracy, broaden political participation, and provide credible alternatives to party-based politics.

Several countries around the world operate systems that allow independent candidates to contest elections successfully, and these arrangements have strengthened democratic accountability in those nations. Many Nigerians believe that adopting a similar model could encourage capable and well-intentioned citizens to seek public office and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Ultimately, allowing independent candidacy could give Nigerians more choices at the polls and help build a political system that truly reflects the will of the people.
