People are often excited during election seasons, especially in Nigeria. The problem is that many voters attend campaign rallies mainly to dance and have fun, without paying serious attention to the promises made by the candidates. This has remained one of Nigeria’s biggest problems. When those elected eventually perform poorly, Nigerians begin to complain bitterly.
Take President Bola Tinubu’s government as an example. Before coming to power, he openly told Nigerians that he would widen the tax net. This is the same man who, at Chatham House in the United Kingdom, could not answer questions directly and had to pass them to others, a clear sign that he had nothing concrete to offer Nigerians. The warning signs were there that if Alhaji Bola Tinubu became president, things would not go well for the country.
Even the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo warned Nigerians in 2023 that allowing Tinubu to become president would plunge the country into severe economic hardship. Sadly, that is exactly what is happening today.
Yet, come 2027, some Nigerians will still vote for APC/President Bola Tinubu simply because they want someone from their ethnic group in power. This mindset is dangerous and must change. Nigerians should rise above ethnic sentiment and vote for a credible leader who can truly move the country forward. Only then will positive results be achieved.
