Nigerians at home, Nigerians abroad, and many well-wishers of the country believe that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was jailed for life because of his past speeches. Speeches they found to be bold, educative, and eye-opening. Although some people argue that a few of his statements were harsh, that alone should never have been enough reason to sentence him to life imprisonment.
Even more troubling is the fact that several northern clerics and public figures in Nigeria have made far worse statements, yet the government never questioned or punished them. These same clerics have openly associated with terrorists in their region, but still the government has refused to act. In the northern part of Nigeria, terrorists are publicly seen carrying dangerous weapons, yet no arrests are made.
This clearly shows that there are different sets of laws for different groups in Nigeria, soft laws for some, and harsh laws for others. This is extremely unfair and harmful to national unity.
However, many Nigerians strongly believe that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will not serve a life sentence. One day, he will be released. In fact, some speculate that President Bola Tinubu himself may eventually be the one to free him. It may sound surprising, even funny, but Nigerians should keep watching as events unfold.
