When President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania was elected to office years back, the people of Tanzania were overjoyed, believing that as a mother, she would lead with compassion by creating jobs, building infrastructure, and respecting the rule of law.
But as time went on, she changed and started formulating terrible policies against the people of Tanzania. No one dares to challenge or criticise her government. Those who did were thrown into jail. She now rules the people of Tanzania with an iron hand and has refused to carry out reforms that would truly benefit them.
Now that another election is near, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has reportedly taken it upon herself to silence all opposition leaders. Another shocking development is that her government has allegedly shut down the internet, preventing Tanzanians from communicating with the outside world, a move widely condemned as undemocratic.
Honestly, this is the attitude of a dictator, which this woman, president of Tanzania has just exhibited. She should be completely condemned for doing so.
Right now, huge protests are ongoing in Tanzania. The people are demanding that President Samia Suluhu Hassan be voted out of office because she is not leading the country well. Judging by the way things are going, it is likely she may not be re-elected.
Africans are becoming wiser now: any elected leader who cannot fulfil his or her campaign promises has no business being re-elected to office.
One of the beauties of democracy is that the people have the right to choose any candidate they believe will direct the affairs of the country better. President Samia Suluhu Hassan should understand that the same people who elected her are now saying they do not want her anymore and that is understandable.
