Democratic elections in many African countries have become a do-or-die affair. Most African leaders refuse to accept defeat when election results do not go in their favour and that is deeply troubling.
Look at Alassane Ouattara, the newly elected president of Ivory Coast. He is over 80 years old and has been in power for many years, yet he still refuses to step down. Even when it is clear that the people of Ivory Coast no longer want him to lead, he clings to power. It is also alleged that he receives support from France, which wants him to remain in office for as long as possible because of the benefits France gains from the country.
However, we believe that someday, the youths of Ivory Coast will find the courage to rise up against their oppressors. That day will come, it is only a matter of time.
