Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party is clearly giving the APC and the government of President Bola Tinubu sleepless nights.
It is an established fact, based on our findings and what many Nigerians strongly believe, that Mr. Peter Obi won the 2023 presidential election. However, because of what many see as a corrupt Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a compromised judicial system, Alhaji Bola Tinubu was declared the winner of that election, which many Nigerians describe as fraudulent.
Despite all that happened, Mr. Peter Obi, being the great man that he is, chose to move on peacefully. Instead of causing chaos, he focused on charity work for the needy and continued to speak boldly on issues affecting the daily lives of Nigerians, especially the severe economic hardship people are currently facing. This has earned him even more respect among the people.
What is surprising, however, is that the Tinubu-led government, which many believe came into office through questionable means, appears uncomfortable anytime another politician is seen meeting with Mr. Peter Obi. This is a man widely believed to have won the 2023 election but was denied victory. Any association with him now seems to make the government nervous.
A clear example is what happened to Mr. Chris Ngige, the former governor of Anambra State. Mr. Ngige reportedly held a private meeting with Mr. Peter Obi, and just days after that meeting, allegations of embezzlement involving over two billion naira were suddenly raised against him. As of now, Mr. Chris Ngige is reportedly being held in prison while the matter is still pending.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, who is alleged to have stolen over one hundred billion naira, is still moving freely around the country with heavy security convoys. No one seems able to arrest him. This clearly shows the double standards in the way issues are being handled in Nigeria today.
Such intimidation will not last forever. Governments come and go. If you put someone in prison today, how sure are you that the next government will not do the same to you tomorrow?
Our position is simple: if Mr. Chris Ngige stole money, as he is being accused, then he should face the law. But the law must be applied equally. There must be a level playing field for everyone. People should not be targeted or arrested simply because they are seen associating with a particular political figure whom the government considers a threat ahead of the next election.
Intimidation and selective justice only make opponents more popular. If the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s government truly want to win the 2027 presidential election, they should focus on doing the right thing and earning the trust of Nigerians, not intimidating perceived opponents.
