Terrorist groups in Nigeria are on a full rampage, and the government has been unable to stop them. One of the worst mistakes ever made by the Nigerian government was enrolling so-called “repentant terrorists” into the military. While it may have sounded good for reconciliation, for security reasons they should never have been allowed to occupy sensitive or strategic positions. We wrote about this in the past, warning that it was dangerous, but the government ignored every caution and continued to recruit these individuals into key security roles.
We repeat again: those “repented terrorists” serving in various military formations across Nigeria can never be fully loyal to the government. This is a fact. Many Nigerians strongly believe they will always pass information to their former terrorist allies. This compromises the entire structure of the Nigerian military.
Today, before the army plans or executes any operation, terrorists already know about it. That is why they strike with ease and escape without resistance. If a whole Army General can be killed so easily by terrorists, then nobody in Nigeria is truly safe.
Nigeria can still get it right, but the government must urgently review this reckless policy of recruiting “repented terrorists” into the armed forces. A spokesperson of the Nigerian military even said some time ago that a repented Boko Haram member can aspire to any position of authority in Nigeria. Honestly, such a statement is laughable and extremely dangerous.
Giving former terrorists leadership roles, as allegedly suggested, is not in Nigeria’s best interest. It can only lead to regret in the long run and must be avoided. For Nigeria to become safe again, all repented terrorists currently serving in the military should be immediately retired.
