There is no doubt that Nigeria is a great nation blessed with highly intelligent, educated, and hardworking people. Unfortunately, the country continues to be led by elderly, corrupt individuals who have little or no regard for the rule of law. This has reduced Nigeria to a global laughing stock, a nation once respected but now viewed with disappointment and disbelief.
Recently, the President of Nigeria pardoned individuals widely regarded by citizens as criminals with blood on their hands, people many believe should have remained behind bars for life. Meanwhile, Nigerians who speak out against injustice continue to languish in detention. This is not only unacceptable but deeply heartbreaking for a nation that claims to practise democracy.
Across the country, Nigerians have continued to protest, calling on President Bola Tinubu to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been acquitted by a competent court of law. Yet, despite the court’s decision, the Federal Government has refused to obey its own judicial system. This level of disregard for lawful judgment paints Nigeria as a country where the rule of law is meaningless.
The situation is made even worse by the rising insecurity, widespread killings, kidnappings, and attacks on innocent citizens, particularly Christians. These tragedies have placed Nigeria in a negative light internationally, further damaging its reputation and credibility before the world.
Nigeria must retrace its steps. A nation cannot prosper when injustice is celebrated, court orders are ignored, criminals are rewarded, and peaceful voices are silenced. Until the government begins to value justice, human lives, and the rule of law, Nigeria will continue to struggle for respect on the global stage.
