There are serious consequences when a country violates the airspace of another sovereign nation, and Nigeria is now a clear case study of this reality.
It is a violation of international law for Nigeria to enter the airspace of Burkina Faso without proper authorisation. Such an action is unlawful and highly irresponsible. If Burkina Faso were a hostile country, that aircraft could have been shot down immediately. That is how serious airspace violations are treated globally. This reckless act is therefore condemnable.
For this reason, Nigeria is not in a position to use harsh words or issue threats against Burkina Faso. Nigeria crossed a red line. Entering another country’s airspace without clearance is a serious offence under international aviation and security laws, and no nation takes such matters lightly.
The best and most reasonable path forward for Nigeria is diplomacy. The government of Nigeria should humble itself and plead with the authorities in Burkina Faso for the release of the seized aircraft and the crew members, if they have not already been released. This situation requires calm dialogue, not arrogance or confrontation.
If Nigeria chooses to play tough or escalate the issue, the consequences could be far more severe than anticipated. Such an approach could worsen diplomatic relations and expose Nigeria to unnecessary international embarrassment.
At this point, the right thing for the Nigerian government to do is continuous diplomatic engagement and pleading. That is the only responsible way to resolve the matter and secure the release of the aircraft and its crew. Pride has no place in international relations when national interests and human lives are involved.
