In most of his speeches, the new Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman appointed by President Bola Tinubu sounds impressive, like a man who understands his responsibilities and would not play dirty when the 2027 election arrives. However, Nigerians cannot trust him completely because of the person who appointed him into office.
There is every reason to believe that the outcome of the 2027 presidential election has already been compromised. Many Nigerians are also of the opinion that the judiciary has already been pocketed by the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s government. Even if the Independent National Electoral Commission declares a fair election result in favour of another political party apart from the All Progressives Congress, and the ruling party decides to challenge the result in a court of law, it is most likely that the court would overturn the result in favour of the All Progressives Congress.
This belief is based on the widespread view that the government has hijacked the judiciary system of Nigeria. As a result, many Nigerians have started planning how to protect their votes by ensuring that the true election results are published and made visible for all Nigerians to see.
Trust in Nigeria’s electoral process is at its lowest point. Appointments made by a government already accused of electoral compromise make it difficult for Nigerians to believe that the 2027 elections will be free and fair. If democracy must survive, Nigerians must remain vigilant, guard their votes, and insist on transparency at every stage of the electoral process. Only then can the will of the people truly prevail.
