NAWAZ SHARIF, THE FORMER PAKISTANI PRIME MINISTER AND LEADER OF PAKISTAN MUSLIM LEAGUE WAS ON FRIDAY SENTENCED TO TEN (10) YEARS IN PRISON FOR CORRUPTION RELATED OFFENCES.

Nawaz Sharif, the 68 year old former Pakistani Prime Minister and leader of Pakistan Muslim League was sentenced to ten (10) years in prison for corruption related offences by a court in Pakistan (National Accountability Bureau). Nawaz Sharif’s sentencing ahead of the country’s general elections on 25 July 2018 is a big blow to his political party (Pakistan Muslim League). He was found guilty for corrupt practices linked to his family’s purchase of several luxurious properties in London (Avenfield apartments). Also Sharif’s daughter (Maryam Sharif) who is seen as his chosen political heir is sentenced to seven years in prison and Muhammad Safdar (Maryam’s husband and PML-N lawmaker) was jailed for one year. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court fined Nawaz Sharif 8 million pounds ($10.6 million), Maryam 2 million pounds and also ordered for confiscation of their London properties on behalf of the Pakistani government. The guilty verdict was passed in absentia as Nawaz Sharif and his daughter (Maryam Sharif) were in London attending to Sharif’s wife (Kulsoom Sharif) who is being treated for cancer and is in a coma after suffering a heart attack last month (June). Nawaz Sharif was removed from office by the country’s Supreme Court in July 2017 and also barred from politics for his dishonesty (he failed to report a monthly income of 10,000 Emirati dirhams from a company owned by his son).
