These are the exact words of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai during a public discussion on insecurity in Nigeria. He stated clearly that “the only repentant bandit is the one that is dead.”

This was a bold and powerful statement that reflects the harsh reality many Nigerians already understand. Regardless of how people view El-Rufai whether positively or negatively, this particular message was truthful, direct, and deserves serious attention. No bandit or terrorist should be pardoned when caught. These criminals show no mercy to their victims, who are innocent Nigerians. The only effective way to stop them is through strong and decisive action.

Today, military officers are being ambushed and killed like animals by terrorists. Before the armed forces even finalize an operation, the terrorists already know the details. This is largely because the government admitted so-called “repented terrorists” into the military. Many Nigerians believe these individuals remain loyal to their former terrorist groups, making it easy for terrorists to obtain inside information and carry out deadly attacks.

In this context, El-Rufai’s statement becomes even more relevant. He simply voiced what millions of Nigerians are thinking: empowering bandits under the excuse of repentance is dangerous and irresponsible.

Once again, we call on the government of Nigeria to immediately stop elevating or empowering bandits in any form. Continuing this practice will lead to even more serious problems in the country. For Nigeria to be safe again, all individuals with past links to terrorism who are currently serving in the military should be retired without delay.
