HOSSEIN FEREYDOUN, THE BROTHER OF PRESIDENT HASSAN ROUHANI HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON ON CORRUPTION CHARGES.

It was reported that the Iranian president’s brother (Hossein Fereydoun) has been sentenced to five years in prison for corruption related offences. The information was made known on Tuesday, 2 October by Gholam Hosein Esmaeili (the spokesman for the Iran’s judiciary) during a press conference. According to the report, Hossein Fereydoun’s charges includes bribery and his sentencing came some months after Ayatollah Khamenei (Supreme Leader) appointed Ebrahim Raisi (President Hassan Rouhani’s rival) head of Iran’s judiciary. Ebrahim Raisi has vowed to aggressively fight corruption, cases against labour activists, and also increase prison sentences. In 2015, Hossein Fereydoun who is a special adviser to his brother (President Hassan Rouhani) worked with the Islamic Republic’s negotiating team on the issue of nuclear deal between Iran and the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany which President Donald Trump withdrew United States from the nuclear deal in 2017 and reinstated economic sanctions against Iran.
