Ghana’s Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo Removed Amid Controversy

Ghana has made history by removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office. President John Mahama acted after a special inquiry said she had committed “misbehaviour,” making her the first sitting chief justice in the country to face such a dismissal.

Torkornoo, who became the country’s third female chief justice in 2023, had been suspended since April after three petitions accused her of misconduct. She has consistently denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated. The inquiry examined thousands of pages of evidence and heard testimony from dozens of witnesses before recommending her removal.

The decision has sparked debate across Ghana. Some see it as holding top officials accountable, but critics warn it risks politicising the judiciary and undermining its independence. The removal also raises questions about how future complaints against judges will be handled, and whether the process sets a worrying precedent.
With two other petitions still unresolved, the Torkornoo case is shaping up as a key moment for Ghana’s judiciary and the balance of power in the country.
