Germany and Allies Push Ahead on Ukraine Security Guarantees.

Germany, together with its international partners, is pressing forward with plans to establish firm security guarantees for Ukraine. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed on Tuesday that discussions are ongoing, though Germany’s specific role has yet to be determined and will depend on both political and military decisions.

He explained that Berlin’s contribution will be shaped by the outcome of ongoing negotiations, the level of U.S. involvement, and close coordination with key allies. At the same time, Russia’s willingness to seek a peaceful settlement will also have to be assessed.

The debate in Germany over whether to contribute troops to a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine has intensified in recent days. Security guarantees against renewed Russian aggression are viewed as a fundamental condition for Ukraine to make any concessions at the negotiating table.

Pistorius stressed that Germany fully recognizes its responsibility in Europe and is already one of Ukraine’s main backers. He pointed out that Berlin is the second-largest supporter of Kyiv overall, playing a leading role in providing air defense systems, financing U.S.-made weapons for Ukraine, and training more than 21,000 Ukrainian soldiers.

According to Pistorius, the priority now is to ensure that Ukraine remains strong and confident during the negotiations. Only under those conditions, he said, can the process result in a durable and fair peace settlement.
