German Foreign Minister Presses for Urgent Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has urged both Israel and Hamas to quickly agree on a ceasefire that would secure the release of remaining hostages. Speaking during his visit to Jakarta, where he held talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, Wadephul emphasized that the moment offers a real chance to bring the conflict to an end, with several neighboring states having contributed to efforts toward de-escalation.
He stressed that resolving the crisis through peaceful means would serve the interests of all parties, underlining that the long-term goal remains a negotiated two-state solution in which Israel and a future Palestinian state coexist side by side. Both Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas currently reject such an outcome.

The German minister acknowledged Indonesia’s deep concern for Palestinians, given its status as the most populous Muslim nation, while also reaffirming Germany’s close ties and special responsibility toward Israel. He said Berlin continues to support Israel’s fight against Hamas but considers the suffering of civilians in Gaza unbearable, urging Israel to shape its military measures in a way that eases humanitarian conditions.
Meanwhile, reports from the Times of Israel indicate that the Israeli government is reviewing a new ceasefire proposal that Hamas has already accepted.
