Goodluck Jonathan

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s past administration and its record will inevitably be revisited if he decides to contest the 2027 presidential election, an election he is unlikely to win.

Many Nigerians have remained silent over the years, not because they are unaware or have forgotten the actions and failures of the Jonathan administration, but because attention shifted elsewhere. When former President Goodluck Jonathan handed over to former President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians expected reforms and economic recovery. However, when the Buhari administration also failed to revive the economy, public scrutiny turned toward the new leadership, allowing the principal actors of the previous era to slip out of the spotlight.

It is important to state clearly that the economic damage under the PDP-led Jonathan administration was significant, and this remains a widely acknowledged fact. For this reason, those calling on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election should reconsider. Any such attempt would likely result in a disappointing outcome and a major political setback for him.

The scale of financial mismanagement and alleged looting during the Jonathan administration was immense by many accounts, even greater than what has been recorded under the APC governments of President Bola Tinubu and former President Buhari combined. Jonathan should be cautious and avoid being pushed by political interests into a contest that could lead to further controversy and embarrassment. Our position is that Nigerians no longer require his leadership, and it would be in his best interest to stay out of the 2027 race.

However, if he chooses to run, he should be prepared to face intense scrutiny and the full weight of the unresolved issues from his time in office. That is the reality of the political climate today.
