Governor David Umahi

Ex-Governor David Umahi Was Nicknamed “Emperor” for His Harsh Leadership Style in Ebonyi State.

Ex-Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, who now serves as Nigeria’s Minister of Works, allegedly attempted to impose the same harsh and authoritarian style he used as governor at the federal level. While in Ebonyi, Umahi reportedly operated without accountability, earning the nickname “Emperor” due to the way he handled issues. Lawmakers in the state were said to be afraid to question him, and he acted as though no one had the right to challenge his authority.

However, at the federal level, Umahi appears to have forgotten that the system is different. As a minister, he is answerable not only to the political cabal that backed his appointment, but to Nigerians as a whole. Citizens have the right to demand transparency on every project under his ministry. Unlike in Ebonyi State, federal ministry officials, stakeholders, and the public can openly question his decisions and many are doing so.

In a recent media interview, Umahi struggled to answer simple questions about his work. The interviewer pressed further, and by failing to provide clear responses, Umahi ended up embarrassing himself before Nigerians. This was a positive moment for accountability, showing that no public office holder should be above scrutiny.

During his time as governor, Umahi was accused of ordering workers who arrived late to be flogged and was linked to several other oppressive actions. He also allegedly wasted state resources on irrelevant projects designed to enrich himself and his allies. Now, realizing that he can no longer operate like a dictator at the federal level, his excesses appear to have been curtailed.

Nigerians must continue to hold corrupt leaders accountable. That is the only way to ensure that those elected or appointed to serve the people actually do their jobs. One day, we believe the country will elect leaders with zero tolerance for corruption, and when that day comes, those with skeletons in their cupboards will finally face justice. It is only a matter of time.
