The time has come for the Nigerian government to take decisive steps to end the continuous killings happening across the nation. One effective approach is to formally support and strengthen community vigilante groups so they can adequately defend their towns and villages especially in areas where government security forces have repeatedly failed to protect lives and property.
Some may find this opinion surprising, but it reflects the reality on the ground. Communities facing attacks cannot continue to wait helplessly for interventions that often come too late. When properly regulated, trained, supervised, and equipped within the law, community-based security groups can play a major role in reducing insecurity.
The violent groups terrorizing innocent Nigerians are not superhuman. They are individuals choosing to commit crimes, and communities have the right to defend themselves within legal and ethical boundaries. Instead of constantly crying out to the government or begging the outside world for help, Nigerians must be empowered to take part in securing their own neighborhoods.
If the government of Nigeria truly wants to end insecurity, it should establish a clear framework that allows vigilante groups to operate legally, responsibly, and effectively under strict oversight and with respect for human rights. Strengthening these local structures could be a major step toward restoring peace and stability in the country.
