Edo Governor’s Promise of Two Million Votes for Tinubu Raises Questions

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has reportedly promised President Bola Tinubu over two million votes from the state in the 2027 presidential election.

Considering the activities of Governor Monday Okpebholo since assuming office, many residents of Edo State find this promise laughable. This is a governor whose performance has left a large number of people in the state dissatisfied, raising serious questions about how and where such votes would come from.

If Governor Monday Okpebholo had carried everyone along since becoming governor and had managed the affairs of Edo State effectively, then the idea of delivering over two million votes to President Bola Tinubu might be realistic. However, the situation on ground tells a different story.
Insecurity in Edo State has continued to worsen and is now considered by many to be among the highest when compared to other states across Nigeria. Governor Monday Okpebholo has so far failed to provide a clear and effective solution to this troubling situation. As a result, many residents are more concerned about their safety than political promises.

We therefore appeal to Governor Monday Okpebholo to first address the rising insecurity in Edo State before making bold claims about delivering millions of votes in future elections. Leadership should focus on solving pressing problems, not making political pledges that lack credibility.
Many observers also believe that if a truly free and fair election were held in Edo State today, Governor Monday Okpebholo would struggle to secure re-election, let alone claim the ability to deliver millions of votes to President Bola Tinubu. This, in the view of many residents, is the reality on ground.

Political promises must be backed by performance and public trust. In Edo State, growing insecurity and dissatisfaction with governance have weakened confidence in bold electoral claims. Until the issues affecting the lives and safety of the people are properly addressed, promises of delivering massive votes will continue to be questioned. Edo people expect action, not empty assurances.
