Brenda Biya, the 28-year-old daughter of Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, has openly criticized her father’s decision to continue leading the country despite his advanced age. President Biya, now 92, has signaled his interest in running for another term, a move his daughter reportedly opposes.
Brenda deserves credit for speaking the truth many close to her father are too afraid to say. Western leaders, who benefit from their deals with Biya, have turned a blind eye to the obvious: at over 90 years old, he can barely keep up with the demands of governance, let alone deliver meaningful reforms. Instead, he is being propped up by those who use his continued rule for their own selfish gains.
The people of Cameroon must see this clearly. Re-electing a 92-year-old president is not just unwise, it is a wasted effort. Africa needs leaders with energy, vision, and the ability to engage fully in state affairs, not men who doze off at every summit while their countries suffer.
It is time for Paul Biya to step aside. Cameroon’s future should not be held hostage by age, stagnation, or those clinging to power for personal benefit.
