Billions of naira have been mapped out as alleged to renovate Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, by the government, while key sectors of the economy like education suffer a huge setback.

It appears the Nigerian government is showing little interest in lifting citizens out of poverty or tackling the insecurity that continues to cripple the nation’s economy. The question is this: why should billions of naira allegedly saved from the removal of fuel subsidy be channelled into renovating an airport that, by all indications, does not require urgent repairs?

These billions could be used to combat insecurity through advanced surveillance systems purchased from credible sources, allowing farmers to safely return to their fields and boost food production. The same funds could revamp Nigeria’s failing educational system and uplift other critical sectors of the economy.

While renovating an airport is not inherently bad, this is simply not the right time for such a project unless engineers have confirmed that the facility is in imminent danger and requires immediate work. In the absence of such urgency, the government’s top priorities should be fixing the economy, improving education, and bringing an end to the widespread insecurity.

Spending billions on non-essential projects at a time when Nigerians urgently need support is both ill-timed and unjustifiable. We urge the government to allocate the nation’s resources where they are most needed as any responsible leadership would do.
