The APC and President Bola Tinubu do not need the votes of Nigerians to win elections in the country. What they rely on instead, many Nigerians believe, are the services of a compromised Independent National Electoral Commission and corrupt judges.
Democracy is one of the best systems of government when it is properly practised, because it is meant to be government of the people, where citizens freely choose who leads them. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, the situation is different.
There is no way the All Progressives Congress can genuinely win elections based on performance, considering its failure to govern Nigeria effectively. Yet Nigerians still go to polling units believing their votes will count. What follows, according to widespread belief, is massive manipulation of the process by the ruling party, which does not respect free and fair elections.
After the alleged rigging, opposition parties are often told to go to court if they are dissatisfied with the results. This happens despite the belief that the judiciary has already been hijacked and will corruptly rule in favour of the ruling party. This pattern has left many Nigerians feeling helpless and frustrated.
Based on this reality, we are calling on all political parties in Nigeria to develop strong strategies to protect their votes and properly document election results. It is not enough to vote; votes must be guarded, recorded, and defended.
INEC officials and members of the judiciary must also be closely monitored. If this is not done, the APC may once again be declared winner of the 2027 presidential election, with the backing of judges widely believed to be compromised.
Going out to vote is only one part of the process. Ensuring that the final results truly reflect how Nigerians voted is the real challenge. Until a more strategic and coordinated approach is adopted, the will of the people may continue to be overturned.
Nigeria’s democracy is under serious threat if elections continue to be decided outside the will of the voters. Without transparency, accountability, and credible institutions, voting alone will not bring change. As 2027 approaches, Nigerians and political parties must focus not just on participation, but on protecting the integrity of the entire electoral process. Only then can democracy truly work in Nigeria.
