Boko haram

Another sad day in Nigeria as suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked and killed Nigerian soldiers in Borno State recently.

The federal government of Nigeria must be held responsible for the recent loss of soldiers in Borno and other deadly attacks by terrorist groups across the country. As the late General Sani Abacha once said, any insurgency that lasts for too long is known to the government. Sadly, this seems to be true in today’s Nigeria.

Time and again, soldiers on the frontline face brutal attacks from terrorists. Many Nigerians believe that when the military wants to respond with full force, they are allegedly stopped by calls from above, instructing them not to act until “clearance” is given. This raises serious questions about the government’s sincerity in ending the insurgency.

Even worse, captured terrorists including so-called “repentant” ones are being released, and in some cases admitted into the Nigerian army. These are individuals with blood on their hands, guilty of unspeakable crimes against innocent people. Instead of punishment, they are given freedom and even trusted with national security. This is unacceptable.

We strongly believe that these “repentant” terrorists remain loyal to their groups and may be leaking sensitive information back to them. This could explain why Nigerian soldiers are being killed so easily. For this reason, the government must urgently remove all such individuals from the army. They have no place in Nigeria’s security system.

If rehabilitation is truly the plan, they should be redirected into civilian jobs where they cannot compromise national security. Only then can Nigeria begin to reduce insecurity in the North and protect its soldiers who sacrifice their lives daily.
