Under the APC and former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, an unimaginable amount of money was allegedly stolen from Nigeria’s treasury. Today, the same All Progressives Congress and its members are still in power, controlling the affairs of Nigeria.
We bring this update to the people of Nigeria and to the incoming administration in 2027: the All Progressives Congress is regarded by many Nigerians as the worst political party since independence. Below are some of the reasons why this view persists.
Under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, an alleged ₦80 billion fraud, which later rose to about ₦170 billion, was linked to the former Accountant General of the Federation. The matter was never properly concluded and appears to have been quietly abandoned. Under the same administration, a fraud of over ₦100 billion was linked to Abdulrasheed Maina, Nigeria’s former pension boss, yet the case did not end in the manner Nigerians expected.
Also under Buhari’s leadership, the former Aviation Minister, Mr. Hadi Sirika, was linked to an alleged ₦2.7 billion fraud, a case many Nigerians believe has since been forgotten. Furthermore, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, was accused of stealing over ₦22.7 billion. He allegedly spent billions of naira printing redesigned currency notes, was reported to own over 700 housing units within and outside Nigeria, and was said to have billions of dollars linked to his name. This is shocking.
Under the same APC and Buhari-led government, a former Minister of Power was accused of stealing over ₦30 billion. Likewise, Mr. Abubakar Malami, who served as Attorney General of Nigeria, was allegedly linked to over ₦200 billion in stolen public funds. The list of alleged corrupt politicians under the APC is long, but many Nigerians consider Mr. Godwin Emefiele as one of the worst among them due to the scale of the allegations.
Our point is simple: these cases reflect the level of damage allegedly done to Nigeria under the APC and former President Buhari’s government. The funds mentioned here, and many others not listed, were believed to have been stolen during that period, and the scale is enormous.
Today, the same All Progressives Congress remains in power under President Bola Tinubu. Nigerians are worried as trillions of naira have reportedly been borrowed, with little to show for it in terms of visible development. Every government needs funds to function effectively, but if these stolen resources had been invested in key sectors of the economy, Nigeria would be in a far better position today.
Nigeria’s problems are not caused by a lack of resources, but by corruption and poor leadership. The alleged looting of public funds under the APC has set the country back by decades. As 2027 approaches, Nigerians face a critical choice. If the country must move forward, the All Progressives Congress must be voted out of office. The decisions Nigerians make in 2027 could finally change the nation’s future for good.
